Bio-Hazard from lighting equipment

EN / IEC 62493  "Assessment of Lighting Equipment related to Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields "

Background International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection(ICNIRP)

Direct effects of electromagnetic fields -Cellular and animal studies

Under the Low Voltage Directive (LVD)EN 62233:2008 “Measurement methods for electromagnetic fields of household appliances and similar apparatus with regard to human exposure”. In 2011-03-18, “Assessment of Lighting Equipment related to Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields”(EN 62493: 2010) has been listed in the Official Journal of LVD Directive 2006/95/EC.

Scope of IEC/EN 62493

Relevant Lighting Products:

  • All indoor and/or outdoor lighting equipment for illumination purposes with AC or battery power supply, which include all industrial, residential, public and street lighting.
  • Independent auxiliaries exclusively for the use with lighting equipment.

Exempted Lighting Products:

  • Lighting equipment for aircraft and airfields.
  • Lighting equipment for road vehicles (except lighting used for the illumination of passenger compartments in public transport).
  • Lighting equipment for agriculture.
  • Lighting equipment for boats/vessels.
  • Photocopiers, slide projectors.

Scope of IEC/EN 62493The assessment/test consists of :

1. The induced current density for frequencies from 20 kHz to 10 MHz

2. The specific absorption rate (SAR) for frequencies from 100 kHz to 300 MHz around lighting equipment. It simulates the EMF effect measurement of a person near the lighting equipment. –the “Van der Hoofden” test-head for item 1.

2: The specific absorption rate (SAR) 100 kHz to 300 MHz around lighting equipment. The product (DUT) fulfils the above requirement when it fulfils CISPR 15:2005, Amendment 1 (2006):–§4.3.1: Disturbance voltage mains terminals in the frequency range from 20 kHz to 30 MHz;–§4.4: Radiated electromagnetic disturbances in the frequency range from 100 kHz to 30 MHz;–§4.4.2: Radiated electromagnetic disturbances in the frequency range from 30 MHz to 300 MHz;

IEC/EN 62493

General Requirements:

Supply Voltage:+/-2 % of the maximum rated supply voltage. For Voltage range: +/-2 % of the minimum and maximum nominal supply voltages. Ambient Temperature: 15 °C to 25 °C. Test Location: inside a standard Emission Anechoic Chamber.

IEC62493

DUT Operating Conditions:

Operating conditions for general lighting equipment DUT operating conditions are specified by the manufacturer. Prior to measurement, the lamp(s) shall be operated until stabilization has been reached. Unless otherwise stated by the manufacturer, the following stabilization times shall be observed: –15 minutes for fluorescent lamps,–30 minutes for other discharge lamps. All measurements have to be done with 100 h aged lamps.
